A Story of Independent Media

MoeMaKa was founded in California in 2003 with a simple belief: independent information strengthens communities.

What began as an online publication for Burmese readers gradually evolved into a trusted platform for journalism, literature, commentary, and civic discussion. Over the years, MoeMaKa expanded its work to support writers, journalists, artists, and civil society voices both inside Myanmar and throughout the global Burmese diaspora.

As Myanmar experienced profound political and social changes, MoeMaKa continued adapting to meet the evolving information needs of its audience.

Following the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar entered one of the most difficult periods in its modern history. Independent journalists, writers, artists, and civil society leaders faced arrest, persecution, displacement, and exile. In response, MoeMaKa expanded its multimedia production and strengthened collaboration with independent journalists and contributors working inside Myanmar, along its borders and across the region, ensuring that independent voices could continue to reach the public.

This period also led to the development of new initiatives, including m.CDM Multimedia, which delivers daily news through audio, video, illustrations, and digital storytelling, and the Myanmar Spring Project, which documents Myanmar's democratic movement, humanitarian situation, and contemporary history.

Today, MoeMaKa continues to evolve as a nonprofit multimedia organization dedicated to independent journalism, civic information, and preserving the historical record of Myanmar for future generations.

OUR PROGRAMS

Humanitarian Support

Supporting journalists, democracy activists, human rights defenders, lawyers, and civil society organizations through emergency assistance, resource coordination, and community partnerships, subject to available resources and organizational priorities.

Community Engagement

Promoting awareness of Myanmar's culture, language, history, and contemporary issues through educational activities, public events, and partnerships within Burmese communities in California and across the United States.

Independent Media & Multimedia

Producing journalism, multimedia storytelling, digital publishing, and public-interest information through websites, social media, audio programming, and other emerging platforms.
